Discovering consumers’ cookie preferences

Challenge

Due to distribution issues, a cookie company’s usual coconut supplier couldn’t provide the exact coconut shred required.  Since coconut is a key ingredient to its cookies, the company had to revise their recipe. They reached out to us to determine if consumers see a difference with the new cookie recipe– and if so, which recipe they prefer.

Approach

In a controlled facility over one day, we tested the two different recipes for two popular cookie variations. First, consumers tasted each cookie and answered a series of questions about the cookie’s appeal, ingredients, taste, texture, quality,  smell, and purchase interest. Then, they were asked to compare the two coconut recipes for each variation.

Result

Overall, the consumers were more likely to recommend, purchase, and prefer the new recipe than the original recipe. These results gave the company the much-needed reassurance to continue with production.
