Understanding low-income Black youths’ mental health

We conducted four online focus groups with low-income Black youth in the pilot city to explore their lifestyles and priorities, perspectives on mental health in their communities, and their input on the program. Groups were conducted with a Black moderator and youth were given the option to privately respond to sensitive probes.
We found that youth are overwhelmingly interested in the mental health program and seek providers who share their lived experiences. Our research highlighted the need for a hybrid of online and in-person groups and gave the client crucial insights to tailor their initiative.
